finally decided to try out linux->suse10->kde (for the ----------ing first time) since I dont play pc games anymore.
afterthoughts, installation was easy, it found all the drivers for my laptop. figuring out how to make it play divx/mp3 was a pain (for a linux newb). booted on winxp, and I have to say, linux is a lot more graphical (at least mine is).
oh, and here's a BIG ***

thing about windows is that almost all the programs for it are not free, or its shareware/trial. I found myself installing open source software on XP anyway e.g OpenOffice, opera, etc- -. So, i figure why not go all the way.
All in all, I have both XP and Linux installed, just in case a website requires IE.
the bottom thingie is called whatever.. taskbar, dock, panel, launch menu blah blah
