Here in NM if you have a situation like that you need:

1. certified mail receipt that you tried to get in touch with prior owner
2. VIN inspection done by certified VIN inspector
3. NCIC check to see if the vehicle has ever been reported stolen
4. Lost title bond (usually $50)
5. Any documentation showing you were engaged in purchasing the vehicle

after all that, you can get the title reprinted in your name for $13 :P

I was gonna buy a first gen hatch that didn't have any papers, and the owner before the current one is probably dead. LOL sucks for me.

I just went through that, all I did was call the dmv and they told me who the last registered owner was

why dont u just swap all the mods onto your car and just go to the station and see whats up if they take the car back atleast u have the mods n ----...

Damn, its not that hard guys, go grab a bill of sale, go to the dmv and find out who the "current" owner is... say u saw that car hit someone and u need the info to report to the police or some ----, the dmv will believe anything. Once you have the last owners name, all it takes is a signature.. and if u really wanted you dont even have to print his name on the bill of sale, just sign it all crazy and the dmv will fill in the name for u.. end of story.. if it fails, theyll just reqeust the info from you.. you lose nothing
