I had the same in the meat of my thumb from slipping off a rock while crossing a river, fell 6 feet on my face and hit hand first. Nothing broken. The gf's hand currently looks like that from where she had to regulate someone at a matrial arts exhibition and got her thumb caught in their cuff. Neither were breaks, just soft tissue damage and inflammation. Hurts like hell, hand is useless for about a week.

If you did that to your hand via a closed fist knuckle sandwich to the dude's head, especially if you heard/felt a pop, it's probably a break and the swelling is accompanying soft tissue damage. If it happened otherwise... meh, might not be a break, dude.

Nah I went to the hospital for it and got X-rays, it's broken. The place where the bottom of my pinky connects to my palm is broke in half, clean break.
