I doubt it's all hype, but wouldn't surprise me if some of it is.

If I wasn't lazy I'd probably search around and find out why somniferums are the "popular" ones. All poppies might have a high alkali content, but maybe somniferum has the highest? Maybe it's the easiest to grow? Largest crop? Dunno. Psilocybe cubensis is one the species with some of the lowest concentrations of psilocybin/psilocyn but since they're so easy to grow they're the most popular. For DMT, phalaris arundicea doesn't have the highest concentration of dmt, but it's the easiest to grow, and is ------- grass so nobody would think anything of it. Maybe there's just reasons other than alkali content.
