That's the smartest way to do it, get the general stuff out of the way at a cheaper community college then transfer to a 4-year university. I've gotten a 2-year degree and am working on my bachelor's now, and also had 2 years of just partying/not studying in college which wasn't great (but it sure was fun )

Went to the University of Washington for a year.
I was on a full 6 year scholarship. They even gave me $2000 a quarter for my own spending.
I have 30 credits towards an ME degree, lol. School wasn't challenging, so I got super lazy, stopped doing hw, stopped going to classes and then stopped completely caring about school. I thought I could find a good job without school.
I thought wrong.
I work stacking 50lbs boxes inside a freezer at a fruit warehouse getting payed $9.20/hour.
I plan to go to the local CC as soon as I pay off my debt and get my car running. Should start school in Spring if everything goes according to my plan.
