Also, I never use the guards either. First thing to come off the grinder

I have had had one close call with a 4" grinder and witnessed a nasty nasty accident with a 7" angle grinder.
4"
I was cutting the floor pan out of my 55 beetle a couple of years ago and took the guard off because it was in the way. Thank god I was wearing safety glasses because the disc shattered and a piece flew up bounced off my glasses (knocking them and my ear muffs off) and hit the roof sheetmetal. The roof had a dent that stuck up about a 3/8"!!! I was gonna post the pic I took but I couldn't find it.
7"
At work one day one of the new guys I hired (2 weeks on the job) was grinding the joint on a rolled 1.125" ring of plate steel for a mining truck rim. Somehow the grinder got stuck and kicked back. Not surprising because those 7" Millwaukee grinders are hardcore. Anyway he had not only taken the guard off but was holding it all crooked and when it kicked out the disc HIT HIS NECK! Imagine that wound above on your neck. There was blood seriously spraying out from between his fingers while he was holding his neck - I thought he was going to die right there. We called 911 right away and luckily the first aid attendant that was on also works part time as a paramedic.
The kid lived and was fine except for the ugliest "don't hire me for a job because I am a moron" scar.
I have been in heavy fab for over 13 years and this is what i have learned. Leave it on if you can - if not and you have to take it off make sure you are protected - especially your eyes. No more turbo anything if you are blind.

I was out cutting some sheetmetal today with the angle grinder thinking about how I should really have the guard on and how nasty that cut looked when bam disc explodes Thankfully I was using a Walter disc and it just blew into pieces when the center hub broke off from me hitting the bench as i was making a corner. Those Walter discs just break into lots of pieces and i only had a few come up and bounce of my safety glasses[always on].I will def not ever buy anymore CDM discs which i use to get when i was feeling cheap.

i almost cut my leg off while using a grinder with cutting disk on it that had no shield or handle when cutting charge pipe for a friends set-up. that ---- was ------ crazy. if you put too much pressure on it it would kick up towards my head or to the side towards my leg. never doign that ---- again.
