gasoline is made from oil
speculation is a problem too. but most of it is supply and demand. no one seems to want to talk about oil prices now that prices are low, corresponding with demand

Re: How low will it go?
Oil is oil but gasoline is gasoline, diesel is diesel and kerosene is kerosene. If there was a high demand for kerosene and diesel then there would be a surplus of gasoline according to your theory unless a majority of the gasoline was being cracked to make kerosene, but that's not the case. Heavier oils that can be used in diesel are more often than not cracked to be used as gasoline. Kerosene and lighter hydrocarbons aren't usually cracked because so much of the oil is wasted when methane and other gaseous hydrocarbons are produced. So, where's the proof that moving goods is the majority of the demand for fuel?
I think speculation was most of the problem. There were a lot of traders heavily leveraging their investments in oil when they got a taste of the price per barrel starting to rise. A lot of guys who got into the market with dollar signs in their eyes and and retarded creditors backing them up, bid the price up far higher than it was actually worth. I really don't think its from moving goods.
