Default Homemade Projector (56k likes da ****)

Ok, so I was bored as ----, a little tipsy, and have had these parts laying around for almost a year now.

Supplies:

17" stripped lcd panel (1280x1024)
beer
styrafoam out the trash
220mm fresnel
330mm fresnel
450w metal halide grow light & ballast
cigarettes
tape
cardboard out the trash
****
90 minutes
mirror
triplet lens
various weights
random shelf
shoebox top
cardboard boxes
rubbermaid tub

10,000 years ago, a child was born to build a creation of unmeasurable magnitude...

Behold! A bunch of ---- taped and -rigged together

Set the mood...

Just for ***** and giggles...

----------ING GOOMBA!

I didn't want to disappoint you guys and not include ****...

might as well finish watching it...

just to give you an idea of the size, the speaker stands are as long as my ****, about 4 feet

Ok, so it didn't turn out as clear as it possibly could. As you can see, there is light leaking around the LCD panel. The edges are out of focus but most of the screen is very readable and crisp, and when you're near the wall the lcd screendoor is crisp, from a distance (the couch) you can't see it.

When I build a case, and properly measure and distance the lenses and optics, it will be even crisper and much brighter. There also won't be the light leaking around the edges of the LCD, and the room won't be lit up by the HID lamp. I measured the screen at 108" inches. After it's properly put together, it should be at 120" diagonal.

NOTE: these are shrunken pictures from a camera phone, and don't quite capture how bright/crisp the image was. I'll update this when I build a proper case.

haha

Here's some pictures from some properly cased ones that others have done:

good color

project gotham racing 3

ghost recon

oblivion?

Anyway, it's relatively cheap. You can put one together for as little as $300 obviously depending on how much you pay for what components.

All the ---- I have totals around $600-700, but it's still a pretty good price for a 1280x1024 (full 720p) projector that will display a screen as big as you want (bigger the picture, bigger the projector though). Replacement bulbs are only about $30-50 which is much cheaper than commercial projectors. You can get 10.6" 1080p lcd panels, but they're around $300+ which is hard for me to pay when I can get 720p panels for $50 if we're having a sale at work.
