Funny, a miata guy that was running 13 PSI with a GT2860 making 270whp just posted this up.

Guy says it didn't detonate, but I dunno. I have a feeling it did, though supposedly the pistons and ring landings are fine.

If detonated/preignition the piston crowns will have pitting; detonation consumes aluminum, the combustion reaction has become so hot that hydrogen and oxygen can't go together to form water anymore (the existing water disassociated into hydrogen and oxygen) and the aluminum and steel of the engine is consumed instead. Also, pics of his upper rod bearing half will tell you if there was detonation or not.
S-bent rods are typically either fatigued metal or hydrolock.
Regardless, that picture tells me that your friend was doing a good job. 270 whp in a Miata is more potent than 95% of the Honda owners on this board understand, and much more potent than 99.7% of domestic owners on the face of the planet understand.

Lack of crankcase ventilation will cause the oil/carbon problem. If it's a carbon hotspot preignition event that caused the damage the upper rod bearing will still show damage. Further, if that is the case, the damage should be localized to the one bent rod.
On the other hand, high gear is where the engine labors the longest and hardest, and if the rod was wanting to bend it would do so when subjected to that sort of treatment.
