I remember back in the day HMT would crash once an hour and we always had that alternate site. (I think it was onyx's site or some ----). I couldn't think of where all the HMT'ers would be, so I just started prank calling people with Bill Anderson from the tuners network.

Hey Abaz,

This forum software is ineffecient and has a terrible user interface (compared to other stuff). It's good that you guys upgraded the server but it might not have been necessary had you been using a different forum software. A lot of it has to do with how efficient the database is. I dont think this forum software was designed well for a forum that has become this big. As a result, the database isnt nearly as efficient as it should be causing more CPU load and RAM usage to make up for that.

If this was my site or a site I was consulting for, I would recommend to upgrade software immediately. It would probably require a custom solution so you dont lose your current threads. I've used a program to convert an InvisionBoard database into one usable for phpBB forum, but dont know if anything exists for this. It might cost you some bucks to have someone make it (not very expensive at all) but in the long run it could definitely save you money.

Lots of other things you could do too, but you can pm for that if you're interested. I've been doing search engine optimization and web forum optimization for a while now and I know that there are a lot of things you could do here that would draw a lot more traffic.

Myshtern, I appricate the advice however the real problem we had was just being on a virtual dedicated server. We were sharing 1 machine with 10-15 people and at certain times of the day it was very slow and laggy. The forum software itself isnt that bad, we are in the top 10 of the largest SMF boards, so there are bigger boards than us that are running just fine. Now that we are on a new dedicated machine at our peak time today 120 users online the cpu is only working around 15-18%. Not sure if many of you notice yet, but just clicking between threads/posts and all around the forum is actually pretty decent now.

If I would have known what I know now when I first started this board, I would have used phpbb from the getgo, but since I cant reverse time and I honestly dont feel like ------- with some database convertor I think we will be fine for now. =)

Jeff

It was turbod16. Whenever HMT would crash we'd go ---- up that site lol.

I've defintely noticed a huge difference in speed already.
If server usage isnt a concern to you, I would still switch software for the user interface. It really does make a world of difference with new traffic. Done properly, the search engines could bring in a lot

Time to put the webmaster to work, eh?
