Check the COM ports and make sure you have the baud rate correct.

yeah, as soon as i plug in the usb to serial, it says the device is not recognized. i got the cable off of ebay for 10 bucks, but it didn't come with the drivers....so i've been online for like the last 4 hours looking for the right driver...i don't even know what brand this thing is, but it looks closest to the prolific usb to serial adapter. as soon as i can get the drivers and get my computer to acknowledge it via drivers, i'll be able to datalog...

I just can't find drivers and i'm about to kill babies

Look closely at what is written on the chip(s) in the translucent plug. You can netsearch this ----, it's pretty basic just annoying.

still doing research for this bs...

the chip in the rs-232 converter says maxim on it...i believe that its a MAXIM MAX232 which would make sense, but still no luck finding drivers

about to just buy another cable and double check for drivers cd
