I bet the dowel pins are rusted or corroded binding the heah to the block. when I my ls block I had to use a vise grip to remove the pins. so tap the head in the area that the dowel pins are while jiggling the head. I can put money on it. thats if you have everything else off like you said.

i doubt it, no water to cause rust, its just the gaskets on the old motors + 165k miles.

I had to take the head off one in the junkyard once, the ****** wouldnt come off so I took a jack out of the trunk of the car next to it and wedged it under the IM and cranked the **** out of it, people were looking at me a little funny but it worked.
