HD DVD/BluRay/DVD
Anyone know anything about the different players/formats? Can a BluRay player also play regular DVDs? Can an HD DVD player play regular DVDs? Pros/Cons? Looking to update from my $60 5 year old DVD player, mainly for Planet Earth

I'm too much of a caveman to spend that much money on all that jive. I have a 50" TV that's probably older than the house I live in and a $89 Walmart DVD/VCR. Good enough for me. I watch about 2 hours of TV a month.

Most are backward compatible with DVDs. Do you really want to spend $300+ for a movie player though? How large of a TV do you have? I would say if it's anything under 50" it's not worth it.
You can get an upscaling dvd player that improves DVD quality a bit. Even a regular DVD looks damn good to me on a 42" screen. At this point the technology isn't worth the cost unless you're one of those tech geeks who needs to have the latest gadget at the time and can afford it. You can get an upscaling DVD player for around $50 and you'll be happy with it.

When I go to rent movies there is this little section that has blueray movies for rent. Kinda makes me glad I don't have that ---- because it seems like nobody carries movies for that ---- yet.

Re: HD DVD/BluRay/DVD
I've watched many of the same movies on the same TV with the same sound system on both Blue Ray and upscale DVD. On most movies, you can tell a huge difference. It seems like there are some movies that "converted" better than others.
Before I buy one personally (HD DVD or Blue Ray) I'm going to wait to see which one dominates. I think Blue Ray will, but you never know.
