The cable providers' receivers are trash. I don't think you can hack the directv receivers either, but you can get their channels. Get a viewsat 9000hd like he said. A friend of mine has been using his viewsats for well over a year with no problem. As long as you buy them from an authorized dealer, and don't get the counterfeit chinese knockoffs, it'll be a great receiver.

you need a dvb card and a dishnetwork dish 500 dish with a dishpro lnb
and then you hafta get the proper plug ins to decrypt the feed
once the satelite is hooked up and my theatre recognizes the card you can scan for channels but they'll all be black screen until you get the plugins properly installed

one cardinal rule among all these forums is don't ask a question that has already been asked and answered
