Default Guys burned a boom truck down at work UPDATED with PICS

http://www.wgrz.com/news/news_articl...?storyid=57100

nobody was hurt This was not the crew im on, there is some talk about some kind of mechanical failure/malfunction with the boom (not sure what really happened), i have a hard time believing they just swung that boom into hot 13200v, these guys are not dumb asses

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ5pbw55vGU

Edit: Apparently the truck was boomed away from any energized lines at least 15 away or so, then left running as the operator left for whatever reason, for about 15 min, and the boom drifted by itself slowly into the line, starting on fire and burning and kept rotating slowly into the other phase, burning 2 phases to the ground (probably kept burning on the ground) it is unclear if the breaker and/or recloser ever tripped out during this event (it might have tripped it out when the 2 phases got together). Even if it did, it would have attempted to re energize the line another 3 times before it locked out. Also, this is NOT the top circuit on the poles to the right of the machine, its the 2nd set of lines down, 13200v. The top circuit is 34500v, so it might have been worse if it got into that. The boom evidently drifted nearly 90 degrees by itself... Looks like a manitex boom to me, i personally have never had a manitex rotate by itself but ive seen their booms and outriggers bleed down quite a bit, even on new equipment... Not sure if its still an issue.

I particularly liked the picture of the metal outrigger foot that turned some of the ground around it to glass (seriously)

Someone ran into a boom truck around here recently and knocked a guy out of the bucket. I've always figured that would be a shitty situation.

I guess it'd suck more to be hit without expecting it than to see the truck on fire and know you have to jump or cook.

yeah. They are kinda fun though. I almost did a faceplant when i was in a little takeuchi, and had the bucket high with a load in it and got a little sloppy with the controls and it wanted to tip over pretty good haha. I bet that boom truck had a stop/start button right on the boom controls, itll let you start it with the pto in too
