What's so special about them? I looked around online and I still don't know what they do.

you use them on handguns and scout-style rifles. they allow you to have your eye back like 2 feet or whatever from the scope and still be able to see through it. most rifle scopes are have like 2-3 inches of relief but if you try to hold your face back further then that all you see is black.
