Default Grinding the trannies : P

Car is developing 3rd gear grind, so i was wondering if anyone have any good writeups or shop manuals on replacing the synchros. Also anyone have any good stories with the OBX diff?

i rebuild trannies and i did so professionaly for a couple years. i have rebuilt some honda trannies before , here is my guess on whats wrong. you have a busted fork and it is not the syncro at all, your syncros should still have a perfect point to them. when the weaker leg of the fork breaks from hard shifting it binds your sliding clutch and engages unevenly. if you were to push the shifter softly into 3rd gear it shouldnt grind. assuming you are going to replace the synchros would probally be a bad guess, just try shifting softly into 3 rd and you will know. i had a crx si tranny that had 2 busted forks 1st/2nd 3rd/4th it would grind going into third and downshifting to second, all i did was replace the forks with ones from a dx tranny and it was the smoothest shifting tranny i ever had.

what do you mean busted forks? I know those forks arent that easy to break, plus the are in place by the housing, and only moves up and down while shifting. I am no expert but I think he is correct about his synchros being worn.

a good temporary fix is to go to autozone and grab 3 qts of Pennzoil Synchromesh. After a day of normal driving, it will work its way into your tranny and the grind will dissapear for a while.

i'm having the same problem with my 90 si grinding in third gear. i've got the housing off cause i just pulled my engine out and felt like it. anyways, where should i look at the forks to see them broken off or whatever. everything in there looks fine to me, but i'm no tranny expert

no. it takes more than 2 qts, so you buy 3 and fill till it comes out the fill hole. Have you never done this before?
