yes he is. i have a d16y8 its vtec and it doesn't say it on the valve cover.

just read the engine # to know if its vtec or not thats how you'll know

BTW. you cant just look @ the engine code. ever heard of a mini-me? d16a6 w/ y8 head.

easiest way is to look for the vtec solenoid.

yes i've heard of a mini me. thats obvious and a given to not look for an engine code if its a mini me lol. His engine stock so he can look for the engine code. but looking for the solenoid is another way too.

another way is the valve cover, the way the oil cap is, and the wires are on the back = none vtec, wires on the front = vtec, oil cap on the back right of the valve cover = vtec.

Well to correct some things, 96-2000 sohc vtecs never had vtec written on them. I think it was only 95 d16z6's that had the vtec on them. Ive had two z6 heads, and one y8, and only one of my z6's had the vtec on it. But i have it on my y8 now. But yeah, only one or two years between 92-95 had vtec on teh sohc. And yes, spark plugs in teh front are vtec, and spark plugs in teh back are non-vtec. And the vtec sylinoid is on teh dizzy side closer to the INTAKE mani, not the exhaust mani, in fact, if it wasnt for that oil cap being in that pic, you really still wouldnt be able to tell if it were non-vtec or vtec.

ya i was confusin it w/ dohc (exhaust side vtec solenoid).

but those pics above are cleary y8 motors (note dip stick), and they both say vtec.

As for it being stock....I bought the car used and it had a ton of stuff done to it....and so you wouldn't really know if the head has been changed. Thanks Blackdragon for all the info, but i have a SOHC ZC and it dosen't have the engine code on it. so what would it be? D16a8/9

look at the left side of the valve cover you should have a solonied there, has green wires, with a gray conector, that's one way of knowing...

no engine code on it? it should be on the engine by the side. or you can check on the side panel where you open the door there should be a sticker on it. but most importantly you want to check it on the engine there should be a series of # and codes on there. Its should also go along with the vin # stamped onto block of the car engine. all cars has this to determine the year, assemble, and make/model of car and to prevent theft deterrent
