Rotary Valves.
Specifically the Coates kind. Nothing to do with Rawr.

Re: Flash944's attack on a 50 MPG beater
update
last couple of days, i've been playing with the timing and with crome and well, now the clutch slips like a **** past about 5k. makes a pretty intereseting sound i've never heard before. the transmission makes a nice clicking sound when in neutral with the clutch out. i'm guessing ISB is toast as well as the gears in the CX tranny. anyway i've got a SI transmission i pieced together so i guess i'm swapping that out and i'll just take a look at the clutch then.
it was a used clutch, didn't even resurface the flywheel. guess i'll just throw my spare used clutch in and turn back the timing.

They never released anything remotely resembling actual flow numbers for either sets. Nor engine dyno numbers. Just a bunch of theory no actual real world testing, and exactly no major companies steped up to front the $$$ for the design rights.
Flash, at least take some sandpaper to the flywheel surface. Knocking the glaze off will help alot regardless of the disc surface. Good luck.
Also, why arent you building that 944? You know that the only major difference between a M44.01 n/a motor and the M44.51/52 blocks are the piston dish, static compression ratio? I REALLY want to find a decent n/a and do a remote mount setup for a daily driver...

Re: Flash944's attack on a 50 MPG beater
another cool thing on the whole VVT subject, there is another solution that ferrari came up with thats the best of both, its pretty much a continuously.
its a 3d ground camshaft, as RPM increases the cam shifts sideways increasing overlap and lift up high and reducing down low
if an economy car used this it would max efficiency as well as reliability

For the record, Buick patented variable valve timing in the 1920's. It apparently worked well enought that they felt it didnt need a throttle...
