Um, declare yourself as an independent and you will get a lot more money. This will result in your parents making about $2000 less a year from tax refunds though. So what you can do is,

A) Find a way to get more money from financial aid. Hit up google. I'm sure someone is written something.
B) Declare yourself as independent. Get more money from the school/state but your parents won't get as much of a tax refund.
C) Tell your parents that if you declare yourself as an independent they will lose XX dollars so they should give that money to you.

As for the California bitching about school, shut the ---- up, you can go to state schools for free.

I should also note that going into some debt for school isn't a bad idea as long as you are going to enter the job field in a position where you will net a good pay and have a high chance of finding such a job. Going tens of thousands of dollars in debt to make $35k a year is retarded.

They can't tell you how much money it takes to be an independent. If you declare yourself as independent, you are independent. What she is saying is because you only make roughly $20k a year, you aren't automatically considered an independent. If I make $60k a year and live with my parents, they can't declare me as an dependent. If I make $20k a year, I'm 18 and I declare myself as an independent, I'm an independent. Sometimes there is an issue with proving this as people don't believe their parents aren't giving them money on the back end and just playing a game to get more money from aid than they would from tax refund(s). Like I said, if your parents are collecting money on you being a dependent and they aren't paying for anything in your life, then you should declare yourself as an independent as you are and just tell them that you need the money. Maybe they will work something out with you.

As for California schools being free, they are close enough. I thought they were cheaper than they are, but collegeboard.com says its about $3k a year minus books and living at home. I don't know if you guys are getting hit with a bunch of hidden fees, but I've always found collegeboard.com to be very accurate with their costs. Financial aid should only be applied to academics. If you want to live somewhere else, it should come out of your pocket. That's my opinion and probably the same opinion of the people in that give out the financial aid. Colleges are businesses. They sell education. They have to make money somewhere. They happen to make their money on out of state students and people that want to live on campus. They are going to get there money somewhere.

wise words but the deal with my school is that they dont consider you independent for financial aid purposes unless you can prove you can support yourself, my income for last year was below 20k and their argument is that there is no way i could support myself on $1300/month before taxes because of how expensive the cost of living is over here...

cliff notes they like to ---- over the little guy, oh ps im really sensitive about my weight lol

I have kept up on my school expenses for the last 3 years, this semester I will be done and have my A&P with Zero dollars in loans. BUT....I just got accepted into flight school jesus ------- christ 15K a semester this is going to suck, theres no way I can keep up with this on my own. I will have to take out a loan to pay for this and it sucks. Financial aid wont give me ----, I'll be lucky to see $300 a semester.
