Compare the pay charts of a 20y GS-12 to a 20y E-7 in the military. (your average retiree)

E-7 at 20 years military, $43,000/ year
GS-12 entry level, no additional income (add-ons for certs, etc) $63,000/yr

GS is also entitled to sick leave, etc. etc. also take into account that you wont be a entry level GS12. $63k for a GS12 is pretty good...

=======================================

Heres my military paygrade:
E-5 6 years $27,000 a year, before entitlements
GS-5 1 year of service, $34,000 before entitlements

I cant wait to be a GS worker. :P
FYI GS employees make higher than that now. Where I'm located, all GS's just got the NY pay scale...so the the last listing I looked at for an entry level GS-5/GS-7 is starting out at $43k/year. My uncle retired as a GS-14 and he was well into the 6-figure mark per year. Our assistant director is a GS-11 and he's raking in around $80k/yr.
