I have been pushed for some time to go out on my own. Now is not the time. If you have nothing else going on and you can do it right. On the books, insurance, correct zoning and such go for it.

Continue with the side work your better off that route. Get really skilled at something and it doesnt matter if you live in a van down by the river.
Performance shops are a thing o the past. Interweb owns performance parts/work. If you want to do timing belts/brakes etc get some certificates in some automotive fields.

check out craigslist for tools. quite a few shops are closing down or down sizing. you can get ---- super cheap right now.
in la a shop had a tire mounter and tire balancer for $800. each of those tools cost double that.
you know how much places charge to mount and balance tires. you would only have to do like 20 sets of tires to make your money back. if you are like me you know some *** drifters, they always need new tires mounted and balanced
