drove my first dsm yesterday.
so as the title says, i drove my first dsm yesterday. its a 90 eclipse gsx. all wheel drive, turbo, 2.0 liter, dual cam. i was really impressed. even with all the problems the car had ( boost leak making anything but full throttle impossible, brakes were horrible, stuts were blown, starter is shot - had to push start it everywhere) i really enjoyed it. when it was driving good, it ran hard as a ************, and drove relativly nicely for having stock struts blown to hell and a 2" drop on dropzone coil overs. i didn't like the shifter at all, i kept trying 3rd to 4th but got 2nd instead. instant boost was actually pretty fun. it was on 12 pounds, but other than that and an aftermarket cone filter it was stock. So the reason why i was driving it was because i was looking at trading my 92 civic 4 door for it. straight trade. i didnt really want this one becuase now that i finally sold my ef hatch i don't have a car to fall back on, and i know im going to sound retarted right here but i want a dsm that is reliable. (flame on) i understand they are about as reliable as 1 ply toilet paper but its just too hard to resist. cheap easy to fix, all wheel drive, turbo, intercooled, all stock. i love the inside too, the wrap around dash is just bad ***. so im really looking around hard now trying to find one straight up. the guy who had the gsx also has a tsi thats kinda torn apart (i.e. interior isn't in car, needs radiator, small things.) that im going to help him put back together so i can drive that one around and see how i like it. and another guy has a 89 laser fwd model with a couple of pretty decent mods on it already. before the last motor blew it was a high 12 fully street car, but now just kinda modded. ive got a couple options here though, the tsi in decent shape but i don't know how it runs or how well off the tranny is (weak spot apparently) or the laser thats fwd with a couple more mods. if the tsi is pretty much stock and the turbo isn't ****** then hands down no choice really. the laser has a horrible rattlecan grey primer job on it, but a pretty good body, no major dents. ill single stage black the car and wheels, and the big *** fmic for the sleeper look. im just wondering if any of you guys know of anything else outside the routine stuff to look for. something dsm specific i might not know about such *** dsm problems or highlights. so thanks for reading the long as thing and thanks for any help.

Re: drove my first dsm yesterday.
A DSM as your only source of transportation = you are screwed. If its a weekend car go for it.
Did 2nd gear grind? When was the timing belt done? those are the major two you want to know about.

Re: drove my first dsm yesterday.
own car, want to trade civic for dsm. dsm not reliable. want to know any other notorious things dsm's have. rebuilt tranny on gsx. second gear didn't grind but was hard to find third. so basically what i want is a reliable dsm for daily driving but im giong to end up buying one for weekend driving? how about gas milage? does anybody know what kind of gas milage they get? driving like the average person. 50/50 highway and city.
