Do you let your car warmup?

Re: Do you let your car warmup?
My car sounds like a bag of ---- when its cold and idling so I just let it idle until it drops a little then take off.
I used a little bigger clearances in my engine for more oiling so when its cold I have a little piston slap. Goes away after a few minutes of driving when it gets up to temp.

Re: Do you let your car warmup?
what you want is the least number of cycles before its warmed, not the shortest time, or lowest revs etc. ideally you'd stay at 1k rpm with full load until warm.
you need to consider also that even once the engine is warm, the radiator isnt necessarily. once the guage moves, there is another minute or so before full warm up has occurred.
imo the best way to warm up an NA engine is by flooring it and ultra short shifting. though i typically use half throttle and stay under 3k.
most of the bearing wear and tear is at startup itself, not while cold (that and at silly rpms with starvation), whereas most of the ring wear is from doing cycles with the temperature not correct.
if your turbo is oversized to ---- you can probably use the same NA technique without spooling it too much. if its factory small, care should be taken to not spool it much or at all. if your driveway is 45degrees steep, idle till warm, if its more normal, drive down the road and dont beat on it before its hot.
if these silly girl friends of yours are literally stepping on it as it starts, they could be doing major harm with dry bearings... otherwise provided they dont boost or rev it... who cares.
my girl idles hers up in the morning before leaving the drive, but mainly to clear the windows with the heater and fan. she also maintains the 3k rule. then again, she also changes her own cambelt, installs her own m1166 pads, and changes her own oil etc... all while looking good and driving well! not your average chic. thats for sure!

i dunno about the smaller units, but the holset slows down pretty quickly after you lift... and synthetic will stop any/most oil caking from heat that occurs in the core from excessive heat. if i'd been running it really really hard, i'd let it pump fluid around for a while before killing it, but mostly for the engines sake.
