Default Del sol d16z6 turbo selection

Basically I own 2 cars. 88 rx7 t2 and a del sol. I miss the power of the 7 but I the gas milage is just too poor for the daily/weekend driving. You know what I mean! Anyway. I'm at the position right now where I have decided to force feed the sol. I looked at the pre-fab kits and I will never see myself spending the cash that they want for one of those. Espically since I live in canada and the exchange and duty alone would kill me. Once again all this has pointed me towards to the DYI turbo camp. I'm pretty good with cars in general and I do most of my own work, however I don't feel comfortable touching my ecu. The rest I will do without problem. What I am faced with now is deciding on the turbo size.

Guess it comes down to what I want... and this is it:

1.stock hp is 125, I want around 200-210 (stock internals)
2.I want to keep my injectors and intake the same.
3.I want the potential to increase power when more money comes available.
4. I have an msd 6AL I wish to incorperate this.
5. I can't have an extended downtime as this is my only vehicle. 1 week would be fine.
6.I want to be able to put it on and drive even if it's not complete... like no intercooler and turn the boost right off. (is this possible?)

There are alot of type-r motor swaps in my town but virtually no turbo's except for 1 turbo LS DIY. All he did was in line fuel riser and fmu (4psi for now)

Thanks. I've been reading your site for a week or so and I like what I'm hearing about uberdata. What's the soldering like on ecu's... needless to say I have alot of questions that I'll be running by you guys.

Your goals of 200-210 on stock internals sounds like a good plan. Your stock intake will be fine, but ditch thew stock injectors and get at least some DSM 450cc. I have a T3 60 trim .60/.48 and I love this turbo on my d16z6. I would go with that turbo. If you go uberdta you could use my map as a basemap and then have it tuned for your car. It should be a great starting point. You can go with a tyrus or custom coach intercooler and get your charge pipes from jcwhitney.com. I suggest you keep researching and start gathering your parts. Downtime should be too long if you have everything ready. You will also want to upgrade your clutch and get some free flowing exhaust (I would go 3 inch). Just try and copy my kit. I spent about $1100 total and almost all of my parts were brand new.

I think you're setting your power goals a little lofty. you are actually making appx 100whp on a stock z6 add 8psi to that and you'll have appx 160whp + boltons like a TB, plug wires, ground kit, exhuast, etc. you might have 180whp. maybe. which is nothing to scoff at. that is like an ITR swap.

also, you'd be an idiot not to change your injectors, a rising rate regulator is the cheapest piece of ---- there is for "fuel management"

do some research around the site and you'll see what I'm talking about, pay special attention to the engine management forum.

You'll notice I didn't say Wheel horse power. I understand that there is a large difference in WHP and HP. I guess to make the longer story short I want to be able to keep up with the type-r's that are in our import club I belong to.

Initially I don't want to change the injectors. Down the road when I have a little more Liquid assets to play with I will continue with that route. For the time being I just want to start out with a turbo with potential, a very basic reliable setup running very low boost (3-5 psi) and then, lets say next summer, grab some more goodies like injectors and what not. I'm sorry if you misunderstood.

Please continue on. Feedback is always good! bad or good.

I was talking about wheel horsepower and your goals of 200-210 are defintely doable because I did it. I ran for about a week on 3-5 psi and stock injectors and it was fun for a few days. You will want more boost pretty fast though. DSM 450cc injectors can be had for $50 shipped and it's defintely worth it. How much do you have to spend on a kit right now?

Around 1000-1200 usd. I have my eye on a HF exhast manifold on ebay but I don't know if I want to have to deal with an adaptor plate. Where did you get your turbo from? How much was it? Where do I find the charge piping on that website you supplied?

*MODS< I HOPE YOU SEE THIS...as was mentioned yesterday....

1200 USD, you will be able to build a kit no problem. a turbo from a junkyard, your lookin around $150. off this site, your lookin at about the same, shipped. so either way...
an hf mani will work for now,(50 shipped) you can upgrade as you metioned, or you can port that HF mani and be fine with it.
charge pipes, and mandrel bends probably 100 at MOST. then for fuel management, u can send your ECU and have uberdata done on it for $20 free...once again in the classifides. --the service is free the materials/shipping is $20, and DSM injectors, $50 shipped, and I dont know if you have an exhaust? i found an exhaust for $44 shipped on ebay and bought it last night. I just searched apexi N1 and then sorted the prices and bought the cheapest one. then for the exhaust pipe, at a local exhaust shop probably another $60 or so. oil return kit, once again on this site, $78 shipped, thats pretty much everything. I probably forgot something but there you have it. if you add up all that its about 600 give or take a little but yep, thats all it costs. ohh one big thing, an intercooler, a DSM side mount intercooler will work perfect, also can be bought from this site for aournd $50. so you asked about costs...there you have it.

ohhhh yeah, and your gonna wanna take it to a dyno and fine tune it, so you can add that in or whatever...but it isnt needed right away...but you will wanna get it done.

As far as I know the nearest Dyno to me is 8 hours away. Can't say dyno's are too common to see in my province. Needless to say are there other ways to tune an engine without a dyno?

Annother thing. What does porting do to the HF? Does it just make the end holes bigger? I so can I just do that with a dremel and the right bit? Just curious.

you can just tune it on the streets its a bit harder, but if you get someone else's maps and use uberdata you should be fine to drive around with.

porting the hf mani.
you can port match it to the exhaust side of your head, and yeah its just makin the holes bigger, and it can be done with a dremel tool, a carbide bit, and alot of time.
