I just pulled a power supply from a working comp and tried it out. Nothing changed.
I may just have to break down and take the comp to a local shop if i cant figure this crap out...

i would have to agree it is the power supply, i had a compaq that did the same ----. when it does work see if the clock and date are getting messed up, it is one way to tell if the power supply is going bad, or you can just eat the $25 bucks to get a new one and try it.
$25 for a new one!? THAT is why you had a ---- power supply.

this could be a few things.

try taking EVERYTHING out (if u know what you're doing), boot w/ just the video card, cpu and ONE stick of ram. does ---- show up on the monitor?

btw.. do this right after it "stops" working.

if it POSTS (you see the first screen where it counts the mem) than one of the components is fried.

start re-installing the components you removed until it stops, then, get a new component.

you dont have to unscrew the hard drive / cd rom, just unplug (BOTH power and data cables)

Beat the ---- out of it. Works like a charm. I've held my computer at gun point before. I had it spitting diodes and transistors out of it's hard drive. Mother ****** learned not to ---- with me.

Hard drive is on the way out. Smack it a few times at boot it will work. I have an old old Compaq that doesnt like to boot every now and then. Well more like every single time you fire it up. Smack the HD and wha-lah she kicks right on. Been like this for almost a year now lol.

Since the pc is that old, it may be dead bios battery, on those hp's dead bios batt causes all sorts of fucked up ---- to happen

dont smack your hard drive. thats a good way to actually kill sectors on your drive. infact one of my old drived was like this, and it was giving me a hard time, so i smacked it. it would boot into windows, but had bad sectors. i smacked it again to get rid of that, it wouldnt boot to windows, only dos. i smacked it again, then that killed it.

i know for a fact it has nothing to do with the hard drive.

im almost positive its a component on your motherboard, or is something else. my main guess is that its a bad mother board ( if you say that it refuses to simply come on ) or is simply a power supply issue.

Ok, i pulled the HD out and plugged in a spare i had lying around. Hit the power switch and this time the HD light DID come on. I tried it with 2 different HD's and got the HD light to come on. Put the stock HD in and got no light...
I just tried a 3rd HD that i kno has win98 and boots up on my kids comp, the yellow light turned on but it didnt boot up.

I did smack the HD around a bit in my frustrations... oops i hope that wasnt the straw that broke the HD's back.

I need to find out for sure if it is the HD, if so I just need it to come on at least once so i can back up all my important stuff on ZIP disk.

so you plugged in the HD w/ win98, the computer turned on, and you saw the POST screen?

did it say any errors when not booting up or just stop?
