What's your car again??
if it is an 88-91 Civic, then no, yours is cable, her's is hydro. If it is newer, it might not be exaclty the same, but more than likely you can swap them.
Check the clutch first, it will go before the tranny goes, but you would feel how it is deteriorating with time, not from one day to the next. It could be a few other things.
By the way this is probably the wrong forums too, it might be moved!!!

Auto or 5 speed?
I would think the clutch pedal would give some indication on the clutch... How does it feel?
Can you move the gear shifter at all? I suppose the shifter mechanisim on the underside of the car could be messed up...
More info...

you have to give information to get information.
What car and motor are we talking about?
Also more than just won't shift. Can you not get any gear to engage from a stop? Can you not shift b/n gears when driving? Can you jam it into gear, or can you shift it if you match the revs up right?

Re: clutch or tranny? and tranny question...
Well to answer the first questions yes they are the same, a 95 delSol with a SOHC Vtec is exactly the same as a 95 Civic with the D16z6.
But check the fluid first, check the shift linkage, which more than likely is fine, then check the clutch, it it is the factory one, it probably needs to be replaced.
The last thing to go will be the tranny, I take it your mom doesn't really abuse the car too much, so I doubt this is it.

Well if i say that the clutch has no pressure, and goes from full extension to the floor, would you know what it is?
anyways it is the slave cylinder :P it seemed to be leaking but the fluid was a little above normal.
ty for your posts though.
and thx for the del slow info.
