I do know about the headgasket issue, but I think with a good build and tuning I should be okay. The Full-Race pinks car didn't seem to have problems and Jeff Evans says he wouldn't be worried about 500+whp on stock d-series sleeves, but then again I would still be a little worried.

If you stay D your only handicapping yourself if your goal is to build a fast car. But than again if you want to prove a point than stay D. I will admit if you stayed with the D it would be cooler, but I only say that becuase its your money not mine.

Replacement parts for d-series engines are always going to be cheaper.
Keep your tranny, keep most of your setup and just add a nice piston/rod combo, some head work, and a nice turbo. Doesn't get any cheaper than that.
