Some of you guys are idiots. Saying Honda and Toyota are just "better" with no proof or even a statement of opinion is worthless. If you look at automotive technology today the big three compare quite well to the Japs. I am saying today...NOT A DECADE AGO. They all have very similar technologies, manufacturing capabilities, build quality, reliability, and durability. You can disagree with me all you want but the fact of the matter is that i have done my research and am confident in my opinion. There is a reason BMW decided to have GM design and manufacture some of the automatic transmissions for their vehicles. The have a bad reputation and they deserve it, but if they survive i think they can show they are competent auto companies in today's world market.

In the light of Honda's degrading their product line to intentionally emulate GM (massive drive train flaws to reap sales at the parts counter, etc) I would agree, but the simple fact of the matter is that Toyota still makes an outstanding product. Somewhat overcomplicated, but outstanding.

Aside from a small handful of GM/Chrysler offerings those companies offer an assortment of steaming crap. I'm with chris that Ford has a chance at viability - even if I didn't like some of their products 10+ years ago it was obvious to see how that was coming about based on their strategy... the mod motor concept where they place a stake in the WORLD economy by putting plants for each engine family in different parts of the globe (vs GM's sending everything to Mexico because it was cheapest).

From personal experience:

2 Ford Tarus - 3 trannies
Mercury Villager - tranny took a ---- only could go in reverse
Ford Windstar - new tranny and a shitty fuel pump
Ford Crown Victoria - exhaust rotted straight out (we don't get snow here) and timing chain snapped with 60K miles
Lincoln Mark 8 - exhaust rotted, sunroof and power windows quit working, air bag system total POS
Cheverolet Equinox - exhaust is rusted and sounds like ----, sometimes randomly just keeps starting after letting off key, constant gas cap failure
Honda Civic Si Hatback - blew the head gasket at 120mph for 2+ min. That's it, only problem ever, beat the ---- out of the car ALL the time.
Honda Del Sol - timing belt snapped at 198k miles with the original timing belt, switched and purred like a kitten no other problems.
Mitsushitti Eclipse - to much to list
79 & 80 El Camino - never any problems

I say they don't give the dumbass big 3 one damn dime. Fuckem. They should make the work place so shitty that the unions go on strike again. Let the bitches picket and hire some fresh meat. Pay my *** $25 hr and I'll move there and work all day every day happily.

Uhm, you don't EVER buy any Ford/Chevy with a FWD automatic trans except the GM 3800 V6 cars. It's not like 90% of imports make a better auto trans, anyway.

that's what happens when you use a water soluble seal in a case that is SUPPOSED to see only oil, but the engineers forgot about good old condensation.. they knew about the design problem for years, chose to ignore it and cash in on the 3000$ repair after the tranny rids itself of oil and seizes up or catches fire.
now folks would rather pay the little extra to get a quest or a sienna.
