My parents have a 20X40 with 8' depth in the deep end. I think its around 40,000 gallons. Between the initial investment, chemicals throughout the season, and a noticeable electricity increase its definitely not cheap. I think its worth it though. Its fun to always have people over and a place to chill with friends on the weekends.

Pools are terrible investments generally. They get used heavily for a year or two, but after that, they rarely get used. I have about 10 pools within a block of me and on the hottest days of the summer rarely will you hear anyone go swimming. Only when they have company over.

If you do want a pool, solar hot water heating is the way to go.

Just take the extra 40-50k for the price of the pool and buy a house by a lake. You can go swimming if you want just like if you had a pool but you can also go jet skiing, buy a boat and do some knee boarding and wake boarding. You'd save of eletricity and chemicals too.

its a kidney shaped pool, 10' in the deep end. its not mine, i didn't want the damn thing. my sister got it at her house, now i spent a lot of time over there taking care of it for her (she's 12 years older than me and single). but yes i agree terrible investment. resale value of a house doesn't go up much by adding one, then it limits your market down to like 30%

Yeah I can really only see a pool as a good thing for someone with a lot of disposable income.

pools are a horrible investment. They limit who will buy your house, don't add any value. If you will enjoy it then go for it. But they are a ton of time and money to upkeep.
