Default Another fun weekend... My tranny went BOOM!!! :::PICS:::

Last thursday I decided to drive up to the street races even though my tranny was grinding pretty bad and making whining noises (I missed a shift a month ago and the tranny has been going down hill ever since). Before I left I had a feeling my tranny wasn't going to make it, but I still went. Jeff had another Z6 tranny, so I thought if the tranny goes I can always buy that one. I get up there to the meeting spot and maybe 10 minutes later Jeff and I decide to race. I really wanted to race Jeff again too. We do some big fatty burnouts and then line up. I launch and go through first gear and shift into second... BOOM! Yeah I guess I missed second gear pretty bad or it just didn't want to go in. I broke an axle a few weeks ago, but it didn't sound like that, I knew something was broke inside my tranny. Everybody thought it was my diff, but I didn't think it could be since that Quaife is the strongest part on my whole car.

I pulled over and the thing wouldn't even roll and it kept locking up. I just parked it for now and got a ride with somebody else and tried thinking of what to do. Luckily I have a friend like Jeff and he said he would help me out seeing as I was 100 miles from home. I had the car towed to Jeff's house and we were going to do the tranny after he got off work the next day. Well since I had Mary with me and she needed to get home, the plan was to drive Jeff's 77 Civic back to my house that night and then drive back to Jeff's the next day (300 mile round trip). I was bored so I took a few pictures of the trip back to Jeff's house the next day.

Here it is the 77 Civic. Jeff showed me how to start thing thing (manual choke) and I headed out. With the springs cut it was a very ruff ride and everytime you hit a bump the whole thing would shake. I was able to get going the speed limit though so that was good. I don't think I have never stayed in the slow lane for a whole trip before, until this day lol.

Got to have the HMT sticker.

I couldn't get the damn radio to work though. Mary had it working on the ride to Longview, but I wasn't paying attention on how to get it to work. I guess yo just have to wiggle it around and hit it for a while.

This was about the normal crusing speed. I just kept her right around 69 mph the whole time. I didn't want to push it too hard.

Me being addicted to racing I couldn't help but race a few people. This guy towing a trailer got me pretty good though.

This old guy in a camper didn't have a chance. I was unsure if I should actually try to pass anybody, but I beat him pretty bad. The old guy defintely felt the power of the "Orange Crush".

Now this guy was defintely hauling ***. He was even in the fast lane. He smoked me preatty bad.

I saw this guy a ways ahead and made sure we were ona hill before I raced him. Yeah he didn't really stand a chance either. I got up next to him and took the picture then he also felt the power of the "Orange Crush".

This big *** bus is defintely a lot quicker than it looks. He tried passing me a few times, but I wouldn't let him. Finally he got pissed and flew by me in the fast lane.

So I get back to Jeff's and were about a mile from his work. We didn't have the dolly so we had to town my car in the molester van. There was a problem though. My front wheels kept locking up so there really wasn't anyway to get towed. I wasn't paying for another tow truck so Jeff had a great idea! Whatever I broke inside the tranny was already toast so he gets in the car and puts it in first gear, revs the engine to 7,000 rpms and drops the clutch. After a little bit the loud noises went away and he did this in all the gears until he was able to change gears from 1st to 5th without the clutch while the car was running. Yeah it didn't have any locking problems after that lol. We get it to his work and after dropping the tranny this is was we find.

That's the ring gear with a few teeth missing.

Here is another shot of the ring gear and the final drive gear in the back.

Another ring gear shot.

Here is a close up of Jeff's great idea on how to get it towed without the wheels locking up. That's the final drive and there are supposed to be teeth on that lol.

Jff cleaning my Quaife LSD. I decided not to put it back in just incase there were metal shavings inside it. I also needed new bearings so I would just have to take it out again pretty soon anyways. I wanted to call Quaife first and see if I should have it checked out before putting it in... didn't want to void the lifetime warranty.

Jeff got a little hungry so he decided to have a snack.

This was the culprit. That's the shifter fork and that little chunk must have broke off and got wedged in the ring gear ------- it all up. Well the real problem was my dumbass shifting, but this was what broke. 92-95 EX tranny's have aluminum shifter forks, so I am going to be looking for a 96-00 EX tranny now... steel shifter forks.

So what have we learned today? Smooth shifting is good and if the car doesn't want to go into gear please don't force it or this will happen. I was actually out today practicing my new "slow shifting" techique and I am getting pretty good at it. What do Jeff and I think about my tranny though? This pretty much sums it all up.

If you read your warranty for the quaife carefully, in order for them to warranty the diff, you have to send them the whole trans and they inspect it.

damn nice Civic, know your roots

My buddy sent his Quaife LSD back 2 times to get new ones, not once did he ever send the tranny. They are pretty cool. The only problems he had was that the things would get locked up internally.

Damn, I love pics. Sucks about the tranny, but I guess that's one of the things that falls under the "---- happens" rule.

Man, Jeff does seem to be a good friend. All this time I thought he was just a know it all douche bag. hahahahahaha

Another solid write up Pat. Lovin the freeway Orange Crush shots.

Sucks about the tranny, but you'll find that its gets easier every time you break someting.

Nice job on the shifter fork/ring gear too, go big or go home huh?

Man, I have no excuse for not driving down for some racing. 300m round trip, holy ----.

Yeah I always end up learning things the hard way no matter what I am doing. It was a good learning experiance though and I defintely fuckered my tranny up good. It was actually a 600 mile trip if you count driving up twice and back twice. The next good racing meet you will defintely have to come down Dave.
