african scammers are getting smart....
so i am selling a laptop on craigslist...
and i get the following email....
"Hello, do you still have it for sale?please get back to me asap"
sounds somewhat legit, so i send a reply...
"yes, i still have it and its still available. I work on a first come first serve basis so if your interested please email me back right away.
I can meet any time after 40 today when I get off work.
Thanks."
so then this reply hits my inbox within 5 mins....
"Hello,
thanks for getting back to me,i am willing to buy this item of yours for my step son who went on a course abroad,i will have love to receive it here in Uptown but i have a very tight schedule at the moment so please i will be paying you $120 for you to help me ship the item to him directly via USPS express mail,i will be paying you with the safest online payment method(PayPal)because i wont be available for cash transaction so please kindly get back to me with your paypal account email so that i can make the payment asap.Hope to read from you soon.thanks
regards,"
and no, whomever is typing the email did not put a name after "regards,"....
this person actually has someone decent grammer and sentence structure and doesnt really come off as the african scammer. Consider this, the person actually names a suburb of the city I live, which is not on any maps. Uptown is just a local slang term to describe a certain area in the city.
so i reply back....
"hello,
I am willing to ship to your step son, however, the way your asking things to be done sure sound like a scam sales pitch that I have gotten a number of times on craigslist.
I understand that your on a tight schedule, however, I will only do a cash transaction and then I would be more than happy to ship it for you. I work near uptown and can meet during lunch or after work.
Please reply back.
Thanks"
so, what is your guys thoughts?
scammer or no?

I would say a scammer for sure. Paypal is only safe if you can track the package to where it is going to prove delivery. So in the US only really.

Re: african scammers are getting smart....
she just replied....
"Hello Jo,
thanks for the mail, like i told you,i live in Uptown, and if i want scam you i wont tell you i am in Uptown, my schedule is very tight and i have been commuting withing Uptown and Cupertino,CA. for a business transaction and that was why i chose to pay you with PayPal so please get back to me if you will be accepting that so that i can make the payment as soon as possible.Hope to read from you soon.
regards,
Becky"
and my reply back to here is....
"Becky,
Thanks for getting back to me. As you probably know, there is a bigtime scam going around that involves paypal and shipping overseas, so I am sorry I had to gauge your true intentions as I am just trying to look out for myself and not get scammed.
If you can tell me where I would be shipping to I will verify that the additional $120 will cover shipping to the destination.
Please get back to me and I will provide you with my paypal info at that time."
Cray - uptown is just a nickname given to the area over by Lake Calhoun
as for me, i am kind of on the ropes on this one, but i am leaning towards "not a scammer"

Re: african scammers are getting smart....
Go along with it and I bet you get a fake paypal email.
They aren't getting smarter. You can still notice minor flaws with their speaking. Normal people don't say "kindly" and ----. I've seen similar crap forever.
BTW, uptown isn't uncommon.

Kinda like.
Lower east side
west side
east side
downtown
uptown
they are all non-descript names for regions within a city.
