This is not true. After 1998, IIRC, GM started using a removable bellhousing on the 4l60E/4l65E, which is basically a 700rR4 with an electronically controlled valve body.
No the 3.1/2.8 700r4 will not bolt up to a small block Chevy. The bolt pattern is different as well as having a different length and diameter input shaft. The clutch packs have fewer plates in them resulting in less torque capacity.
I have no idea why GM ever decided to put any of the 60 degree V6 POS engines in such a heavy chassis. The Camaro/Firebird in got the 2.8 in the earlier years, pre 1990, and the 3.1 for the latter part of the third generation body style, 1990-1992. The earlier 4th gens got the 3.4 POS through 1997 until GM finally gave the f-body platform a half way decent V6 engine, which was the 3800.
Don't waste your money unless the body is pristine and you want a project car. There is almost nothing sadder than a V6 Camaro. Now a V6 Firebird can be a different story. cough89TTAcough. Turbo 3800.

I'd still like to have a 1990 IROC with the G92 package. Yeah, it has a 305, but it came with the hotter cams, posi, 3.42 gears, and a 5 speed. Also still want a 1991-1992 !LE. Manual everything big brakes G92 drivetrain or the L98, and the better suspension. Not spectacular by todays standards but still a cool ride in my book.
