Re: ups and downs of a ihi thunderbird turbo???
Twin turbo is fine, they're very efficient as is. The problem is people thinking they can pull 300-400 hp out of a single Vj11 or T Bird, thats not gonna happen.
What IHI were you using? VJ11?

No, VJ17 were used in the 1.8 (BPT) 323 GTX Group A rally cars and never made it to the US.http://www.mazdafun.com/product%20info%20turbo.htm The T Birds are referred to as VC34.

Re: ups and downs of a ihi thunderbird turbo???
i am planning on picking up an 89 accord hooptie and i am gonna slap a cheep turbo setup on it. the motror is an a20a single cam 12v motor. its 2.0l my boss has a tbird turbo sitting in his garage that he is not going to use, so i might see what he wants for it. i am totally going ceep-out for the whole set up. its just for fun, and i am just learing about turbos. i am not doing any engine mods to the car. i am hoping to run about 12 psi. the motor has an iron block so i should be able to play at least for this summer before i blow it up. my only question is, how would you compare the tbird turbo to that of a dodge shelby? i know those also go pretty cheep on ebay. what ever turbo i use i dont plan on spending more than $70 on it

Re: ups and downs of a ihi thunderbird turbo???
Holy crap are you guys good at bringing back old threads. One important thing to remember is that the T Birds used different turbos throughout the years. The Warner Ishi has a T3 exhaust side but has an IHI turbine and is interchangable with the VJ11. The wasgate is regulated to 8.7 psi and should not go past 14 psi.
The T3/aiResearch has a T3 exhaust housing AND a T3 turbine and is not interchangeable with IHI whatsoever. This turbo came with either a .48 A/R or .63 A/R exhaust housing depending on if it was MTX or ATX. The wastegate was regulated to 14 psi.
There is a BIG difference between the Warner Ishi and the Garrett/aiResearch turbos.

i am not really sure of what turbo it is, or if i am going to use it. i really dont plan of going over 12 psi so i guess either one would work. its wither one of these or the shely turbo, whichever is cheepest.
i am totally cheeping out

Re: ups and downs of a ihi thunderbird turbo???
All 2.3 ford wategate actautors be it a ihi or t3 are 10# units, On the EFI 2.3's with the fuel switch in "regular" mode the car would run 10#. When switched to "Premium" the BSC (Boost Control Solenoid) would open an air bleed orfice and allow it to run 15#.
But if you are worried about it just check the one you have. But I am certain about the ford 2.3 wastegate actuators, I have been messing with 2.3 turbos for years. Here was mine http://www.eville140.com/rx7.html

super old thread i know, but I thought I should update this in case some one searches - i dpn't want to give out more bad info than I have.
I just updated my IHI page for the first time in a longgg time: Matt's IHI Turbo Page <p>IHI = Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries.
Sick is correct, the T-bird is indeed not a vj17. I wont get into where that came from, but the info he posted about is all correct.
Except the fact that that "T bird" compressor map is actually from a VM9:
Looking here for the comp spec: RHB5 - Ihi - Catalog - TurboMaster
shows that its a VM9 from a Maserati of some sort
Then you can get the actual comp wheel dimensions (41.3/52.5mm) here:
http://www.turbointernational.com/im...atalog-IHI.pdf
Which luckily turn out to be pretty close. So while I don't think I ruined anyone's set up with an off compressor map, I thought i should set that strait...
BTW - I saw some one quote my web page calling me Mark? Where the heck did that come from lol. Its Matt.
