Default Turbo Setup - D16y7 - Questions

Hello All!

So, here I am after reading countless threads from this site, Honda-Tech, Honda Hookup, and about countless other message boards as well as a lot of google searching trying to figure out how to add a turbo to my engine. I get the whole concept as a whole, but I am still fuzzy on some specifics. I am hoping that someone experienced can shed some light.

First some details:


Car: 1997 Del Sol "S" - D16y7 MT
Budget - $2000 - (I would think this would be enough)
Intentions: Small turbo pushing 6 - 7 psi

What I understand:


I know what components are needed, please someone tell me if I am missing something in this list:

1 - Turbo (t3/t04 perhaps)
2 - Intercooler (with related piping)
3 - BOV
4 - Wastgate (internal or external)
5 - Turbo Manifold (cast iron from what I gather is the best to use)
6 - Downpipe with at least 2.5" exhaust attached
7 - Bigger Injectors (not sure what size)
8 - Fuel Pump
9 - Upgraded Clutch (not sure if I need this on a small amount of boost)
10 - Gauges (Boost, A/F Ratio, Oil Pressure, etc..)
11 - Some sort of Fuel Management (FMU, AFC Hack, Stand Alone, etc..) <--This is what I have the most trouble understanding how to implement.
12 - Boost Controller (because wastegates have what's called "creeping" with the psi not staying in check)
13 - Copper Spark Plugs that run colder

I know that while just mounting all the necessary hardware (turbo, intercooler, wastegate, etc..) seems to be the easy part, getting the engine to play nice with the turbo (to prevent knocking, limp mode, CEL etc..) is the hard part. I know that you set your wastegate to a particular psi with an internal spring, and set your boost controller to a certain psi which controls how much pressure is flowing. I also know that you have to have oil tapped off of the oil pan to and from the turbo to have oil flowing to the turbo for it to function properly as well.

What I can't wrap my head around:

I can't figure out how to configure the rest of the system so my engine doesn't blow up. What I gather so far is I need a way to add fuel based on how much added air pressure there is, and I also need a way to adjust ignition timing which also affects running lean or not? I have read a lot on fuel management, and all the options. I think I *almost* figured it out. Since I have an OBD 2 ECU I need to switch to OBD 1 ECU by getting a P06 (since my car is non-vtec) and getting a harness adapter from OBD 2A --> OBD 1. Then I have to get my ECU "chipped" so that the program that's in the ECU can be changed? Ok, so that's about all I know on this. I am very confused. I know that you can get something like Hondata or Crome or something to change the program parameters. But how do I know what numbers to use with the program?

Then I read stuff on the AFC hack and stand alone FMU. But I really don't get how to implement this stuff either.

I just need something to control things in the engine...the simpler the setup, the better (or if someone can explain things so the light finally turns on in my head)

I know that I will probably get some flaming on what I am asking, but trust me I have searched and searched and read for hours on end. I just want to understand this stuff. I work on computers and computer networks for a living, so i'm not the dumbest person on the block, but this stuff sure makes me feel like I am.

Any help in understanding how to implement fuel management / engine management for the setup I want would be greatly appreciated.

What you need is a set of bigger injectors, rc450's for your car, then when you buy the ecu harness to swap the obd2 to obd1, you need the obd1 ecu "socketed" to accept a new chip, then go on ------------- and get a custom chip built for your car as a base tune, put the chip in, hook up the ecu and there you go...

forget the stand alone and afc hack ----... not worth it for 8psi

Thanks for the information. So I need bigger injectors...what about the fuel pump? Do I need to go better on that one too or will stock work for this setup you think? Also, when you say get a custom chip built for my car, what do I tell them as far as the setup is to make sure that the base tune will work. Will going this route with the custom chip be good enough to drive it without additional tuning. I know that tuning is always better, but does this mainly have to do with more complicated setups making more power than this? It's going to be street driven almost daily..

Oh I just went to ------------- and I looked up "chipping" services. And one of the things they need im not sure how to get the reading. It's the part that says "- Fuel Pressure at idle (hose off)". I know what fuel pressure is, but how do I get the reading short of hooking up a gauge and getting it. The "hose off" thing doesn't make much sense to me either. Everything else seems pretty straight forward.

If I am to get this right now, I just give them the information that they need for the chipping, and they make the map and load it onto a chip which I just put into the socket in my modified ECU (P06) and then I can drive the car with the settings I gave them?

I would love it if all I had to do was get a chip programmed for a specific boost level and off I go.

ahh of course people stop talkin lol im having the same problems you are... and no one wants to help any more lol DAMNIT! im freakin confused too with like tuning n stuff, people just say o just get chipped and obd2 to 1 or some crap lol I JUST WANT A FREAKIN STEP BY FREAKIN STEP LIST OF TUNING WITH OUT GOING THROUGH HONDATA!!!!!!!

you need to get a walbro 255 pump... the chip from them is a base map setup, you still need to go to a dyno and have a good tune put on it. There is no way someone can give you a perfect tune....every car is difff so yes you have to get the tune from a dyno.

the cheapest most reliable way to add fuel to your boosted engine is with a extra injector controller. since your only going to be boosting 6-7 psi i would suggest using all the stock fuel injection components. there is no timing adjustment with an extra injector controller but at 6-7psi boost timing adjustment is not needed. the only modification i would recommend is a 190lph fuel pump since you will be feeding fuel to extra injectors. you can go the cheap route by adding the injectors to your boost pipe right before your throttle body or you can go the better more expensive route and install the extra injectors in each intake runner. i think this is by far the best setup for low boosted vehicles since the factory harness, ecm and fuel system can all be used without modification.

Default Sorry to butt in. I am running a similar set up

I currently running 8 psi in my 99 civic d16y7. Stock internals and 168k on the motor. I know before too long I will need a rebuild but I was considering running a d16y8 instead would this be a improvement over a y7? I was told my ecu could easily run the vtec motor if I wanted to swap. It is using chrome. Also is there a community within the site that is all about d16's if so a link to that would be sweet. Thanks for the help.

electromagma i would suggest getting the dsm injectors walbro 255 fuel pump.

Fuel management wise most shops sell the ecu harness should be able to chip it for you and every thing else
