Converting ebay turbo into ball bearing turbo
Hey Guys,
I have a ebay M12 turbo and I want to see if it is possible to replace the front jurnal bearing for the compressor wheel with a ball bearing. I am attempting to making an electric supercharger for low and mid range rpm boost with an low impeller speed of 50,000 so a standard stainless ball bearing should work seeing that the electric supercharger will not be in constant use.
Has anyone ever thought about doing this with bearings?
Can anyone tell me if this has been do before?

I not trying to get high speed with the concept just trying to free up resistance to get more benefit from my electric motor. I just want to replace the front jornal bearing with a ball bearing with a flange and extended race. So I measured the front jornal bearing and its mounting hole and I will try to find a bearing to replace it.
Just my little project for my 300zx NA. There is no turbo kit for it. High rpm boost will crack the wrist pins so I need low rpm and mid range boost. So its really not worth while to pull the engine just to replace the wrist pins. My goal is to get cool intake charge of 6 psi @ 2,000 to 8,000 rpm out of my electric supercharger.
If it works thats great but if it does not work then oh well. Thanks for the reply.

Rear mount turbo is the way to go on that car. Electric could work but it's highly unlikely you will get anywhere near the results you are expecting. Trying to get 50K RPM from an electric motor is going to be more difficult than you think.
Here's a couple photos of a rear mount turbo in a 300ZX N/A. Photos are crappy and the install isn't all that pretty but you get the idea.

This is a ball bearing out of a turbo. Not like your skateboard wheel.

I thought about doing the rear turbo but like I said I can only run low boost of 5 to 6 psi and at high rpm the turbo would act as a choke point. With the electric supercharger a air diverter can be used to switch airflow once the electric supercharger has reached its performance limits to allow the engine to breath on its own.
I have a 2+2 and the gas tank is blocking the space where the turbo would mount. I bought the turbo and everything ready to mount it up until I looked under the car to see my gas tank blocking that area.
