how hard was it to modify the electronic VGT controller to make the wastegate actuator work? Since you are using the actuator technically you could use a boost controller to adjust when the vains open correct? have you messed with this to see if it has any affect on spool? or is it fairly good where you have it set now? | | The electric actuator has been removed. I haven't been able to determine what kind of signal the stock ECM sends the unit to move it, and what it sends back for position information. I removed the electric motor, and epoxied the coolant holes in the flange that are meant to cool the actuator. That leaves an arm with a gear on it, there is a hole in the arm that is pretty close to the distance from the pivot as a standard internal wastegate arm. I put a pin in there, and attatched a 14b wastegate actuator to that pin. Then you have to find somewhere to mount the head of the actuator thats solid. That will vary by your application, and what actuator you use.
Here is the electric actuator.
Internally it appears to use a stepper motor, but there are a LOT of electronics inside between the motor and the 4 wires that come out of the unit.
If there is anyone that works on these trucks, or maybe for holset and could get some info about these actuators it would make it alot easier to figure out.
Here is the arm when that actuator comes off, the 2 non rusty looking areas on the flat are where the epoxy fills the coolant holes. Also you can see where the wastegate actuator arm is attatched.
Yes if you put a boost controller on the VGT actuator pressure source you could make it reach the other wastegates set boost at lower RPM. It shouldn't change initial boost much though.

| Re: 95 TSI AWD Project VGT Holset no 56k Cool...I'm keeping my eye on a few for sale right now...I assume if someone can figure out the electronics you could use a boost switch to activate the vains...I like your method though...Thanks
I might see if I can dig up some service manuals for the the truck this turbo came off of, that might give some insight in how the electronics work for it... |

| Re: 95 TSI AWD Project VGT Holset no 56k The electronic method isn't going to be easy to work out. It will take far more than a boost switch. For now you will be better off doing it the old fashioned mechanical method unitl someone does a lot of dicking around.
Good luck with your project. |

| Re: 95 TSI AWD Project VGT Holset no 56k Hi there! This is my first post around here... I have a few questions and I hope you can help me...
I am turbocharging a Ford 5.0L, shooting for nothing over 12psi and slightly under 450hp, which is the known limit for the stock block and I was considering the twin-turbo route using a couple of Garrett VNT25's, recent research suggests me that even a couple of them would be undersized for this kind of displacement as they were originally bolted onto 2.2L chryslers and they were already quite restrictive on the exhaust side...
Seeing this Holset being used on a 2.4L I can't help wondering if this turbo isn't really a bit oversized, just asking for my own research, I don't want to get anyone offended here!... if this turbo works well on a 2.4, one could easily be mislead into thinking that it would probably be a little undersized for a 5.0L, which I tend to doubt given this unit is originally installed by Dodge on 6.7 diesels .
Leaving gas engine EGT's alone (that's a whole other issue) I don't know much about the differences in exhaust flow between diesel and gas engines.. I mean, does a diesel engine produce substantially more exhaust gases per displacement unit than a gasoline engine or are they about the same?... I'm asking all this because I'm trying to figure out if I should dump the twin turbo idea and just go for one of these turbos for my 5.0... too small? too big? can anyone please cast some light on this? I'm all confused now... thanks. |
